In recent years, there's been a shift to higher security fence systems for municipal infrastructure projects. The Bonnybrook wastewater treatment facility in Calgary was no different. We recently completed an interesting Omega Max and chain link project at this site.

What Is Omega Max?

Omega Max is a heavy duty welded mesh panel fence system, which is anti climb and anti cut. This makes it perfect for sites that require a little more than the usual level of security.

This product is manufactured from 4mm wire, with a 0.5” x 3” (12.7 mm x 76.2 mm) mesh aperture. It is pregalvanized and polyester coated too, so it has additional protection against corrosion. This means that it is a very low maintenance fence system too.

The Project

The upgrades to the Bonnybrook wastewater treatment plant under project BBWWTP, Plant D Outfall were put out on tender by the City of Calgary, who own the facility. However, since this was a part of a larger upgrade project, we worked as a subtrade, appointed by Graham Construction, who were the generals on the job.

Varying security requirements at the site allowed for the client to specify a hybrid perimeter fence, with 8' high Omega Max and a high security cantilever at the outfall, where security was most critical, and 6' high black chain link fence around the perimeter of the site.

By combining these two complementary fence types on this project, the client was able to get the higher level of security they needed where it was required, but keep the overall costs for the project lower than if they had done the high security fence around the whole perimeter.

Extra Protection

Because the new fence was being installed alongside a roadway, it was decided that a little extra protection was a good idea.

So another part of the project was the supply and installation of highway guardrail along the fence line. With this in place, vehicles (and the fence) are a little safer!

Perimeter Security Fence Design

While we weren't the designers or specifiers on this project, we do often recommend a hybrid fence specification like this for our commercial and industrial clients.

Very often, security or aesthetic requirements demand a more expensive fence type on part of a site, but there are opportunities to save on other areas of a fence line.
